Chapter 10

Duncan stirred the soup cooking on the stove as Ryanne watched from her perch at the counter. “Smells wonderful,” she told him.

“I could teach ye how tae make it.” He glanced over his shoulder when Ryanne laughed like he’d just told a great joke.

“No thanks,” she said. “I'll leave the cooking to you.”

Duncan scowled at her. “Ye would think for people who are so in tune with nature that ye would ken how tae cook on a fire.”

“We don't have to cook,” she told him. “We just make others do it for us. Or, for the last few hundred years or so, order from a restaurant.”

“What did ye do before there were restaurants?”

She cocked her head and looked off to the side. “I don't remember,” she told him.

A knock at the door cut off his laughter. Duncan glanced at Ryanne, turned off the stove, and held his finger up to his lips.

She nodded, quietly getting down off the stool and walking into the center of the living room where she would have an unobstructed view of their visitor.

Walking in that stealthy way he had that was so strange for a male his size, Duncan went to the front door and peeked out through the peephole. His shoulders instantly relaxed and he glanced back at Ryanne with a puzzled expression as he unlocked the door and swung it open.

Keelin ran over and threw her arms around her, nearly knocking her off her feet. “I’ve been so worried about you,” she said.

“I'm fine, I'm fine.” Ryanne hugged her back, watching over Keelin’s shoulder as Duncan went back to the stove. “What are you doing here?”

With one last squeeze, Keelin released her, but kept a hold of one of her hands. “I'm sorry. I know you're supposed to be in hiding and all that, but I had to come tell you.” She paused a moment and caught her breath. “You need to come back. Your father is out of control.”

“Well, that's not news.”

“No, I mean really out of control. He's trying to mate your sister with Cedric.”

“And that’s a bad thing?” Duncan asked over his shoulder.

“Yes.” Keelin looked at Ryanne. “Isn’t it?”

“Och,” Duncan spoke into the pot of soup. “Cedric has been panting after her since he first saw her. I dinna ken what’s so bad about that if it will make him happy.”

“What's bad about it is that she is not keen on the idea. And if she doesn't go along with it, she's going to end up like you, Ry.”

“You mean dead?”

“Yes, that’s exactly what I mean,” Keelin said. “He thinks the alpha wolf can control your sister.”

Ryanne burst out laughing. “No one can control Duana.” The idea was absurd. She had never
